How to Temporarily Relieve Tooth Pain

If the filling in one of your teeth has fallen out and you are experiencing pain, here is how to temporarily relieve the discomfort until you are able to have a new filling installed by your dentist.

Use the Following Materials

  • mirror
  • salt
  • glass of warm water
  • spoon
  • black teabag
  • gauze
  • latex gloves
  • dental putty
  • putty applicator

Rinse with Saltwater and Apply a Warm Teabag

Add a couple teaspoons of table salt to a glass of lukewarm water. Stir the salt until it has dissolved. Swish a small amount of saltwater in your mouth for a minute or too. The salt will quickly relieve the pain. Spit out the saltwater and rinse your mouth out with more if the pain hasn't subsided completely. If your mouth is swollen around the tooth that is missing the filling, wrap a warm teabag inside of a piece of gauze and place it against the painful area for a few minutes.

Apply Dental Putty over the Damaged Tooth

Covering the exposed nerves in the damaged tooth will prevent you from experiencing more pain when the saltwater loses its effectiveness. It will also allow you to eat food, drink beverages, and rest comfortably. Dental putty is an inexpensive and effective product that can be used to accomplish this. Put on a pair of latex gloves to prevent germs from spreading as you are handling the putty. Place a small amount of putty in your hands and mold it between your fingers until it flat and wide enough to cover the damaged part of your tooth.

Use a putty applicator to apply the putty to the tooth is missing the filling. Press the applicator against the putty until it has bonded to your tooth. This may take a few minutes. While you are waiting for the putty to adhere, relax your jaw and avoid speaking.

Wait for the Putty to Harden

Do not eat any food or drink any beverages until the dental putty has hardened. Lightly touch the putty to determine when this has occurred. The putty can stay in your mouth for a couple days, but it is still wise to avoid using the damaged tooth to chew because the putty may loosen if too much pressure is placed on it. After the pain has been eliminated, you will remain comfortable until you are able to have an emergency dentist place a new filling over the tooth that was causing you discomfort.
