Away At College And Suffering Through A Toothache? 3 Natural Ways To Alleviate The Pain

You're finally on your own and living the college life. Suddenly, you develop a toothache. You're not sure what to do because Mom always took care of those things for you. It's the weekend and you can't afford to pay cash for an emergency trip to the dentist. Don't panic. You can alleviate the toothache pain with some ingredients that you probably have on hand.

Rinse with Salt Water

Salt water is the tried and true solution to toothache pain. Not only will salt water dull the pain, it will also relieve the inflammation and fight the infection that is causing the pain. Simply place about 8 ounces of warm water in a cup and add 2 teaspoons of salt. Mix well to dissolve the salt. Place a mouthful of the salt water in your mouth and swish it around for about a minute. Spit the solution out into the sink and repeat the process until all the water has been used. Rinse with salt water several times a day until you can get to the dentist.

Apply a Tea Bag

If you've got a throbbing toothache that's caused by an abscess, you should reach for the tea bags. Tea contains tannic acid, which is a natural antibiotic. Place the tea bag in a glass of hot water and allow it to soak for several minutes. Remove the tea bag and let it cool down to the touch.

Place the tea bag directly on the affected tooth and leave it there for about 15 minutes. Repeat the process several times a day. The tannic acid will dull the pain and relieve the swelling associated with the abscess.

Apply Raw Onion

Onions are nature's own antibiotics. If your toothache is caused by an infection, onion juice will help kill the infection and alleviate the pain. Peel a fresh onion and slice it up into small pieces. Take one piece and squeeze it over the affected tooth so that it's covered in onion juice. Take another piece of onion and place it between the side of your mouth and the affected tooth. Leave the onion in place for several minutes. You can repeat this as often as necessary.

Toothaches are no fun. If you have no way to get to the dentist, that toothache pain can become unbearable. You don't have to suffer through the pain. Use these simple home remedies to alleviate the pain. Be sure to contact a dentist as soon as possible.
